Saroj Khan


Today Polly will be featuring one of the most prominent Indian dance choreographers in Hindi cinema Saroj Khan. Saroj Khan has been an effective choreographer since years who has given many hit songs creating a history in the chapters of Indian Cinema.

Nirmala Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Nagpal aka Saroj Khan was born on 22nd November 1948 to Kishanchand Sadhu Singh and Noni. They moved to India from Pakistan during the Partition. Saroj Khan started her career as a child actor in the movie Tarana when she was only 2 years old. She has played the little Shayama sitting on the moon and singing. She also worked as a background dancer in the late 1950s. She learnt dance while working under film choreographer B. Sohanlal and got married to her when she was 13years old. He was a well known dance master at that time. Sohanlal was 41 years old and already married and had 4 children. When she was 14 she gave birth to her first child Hamid Khan, who is also a famous choreographer by the name of Raju Khan.

In 1965 she got separated from Sohanlal, but kept working as his assistant. Later Sohanlal had an heart attack and that’s when they reunited again. Saroj Khan had another child from Sohan Lal, her daughter Hina Khan (cuckoo). Sohanlal then moved to Madras leaving behind Saroj and two children. Afterward she got married with Sardar Roshan Khan and she gave birth to a daughter named Sukaina khan, who now runs a dance institute in Dubai.
Later she herself shifted to choreography, first as an assistant choreographer and later getting her break as an independent choreographer, with Geeta Mera Naam (1974). She shot to fame after her hit dance choreography for “Main Teri Dushman” from the movie Nagina. This was followed, in quick succession, by Mr. India, Ek Do Teen and Beta’s Dhak Dhak. She has worked regularly with Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit who are two of the best dancers Bollywood has ever seen. Thereafter she went to become one of most successful Bollywood choreographers. She got acclaims for her best dance moves in the songs.

Someof her other movies for which she did the choreography were Darr (1993), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Lagaan (2001), Devdas (2002) and more recently Namastey London (2007) and Delhi 6 (2009). In 2014, Khan worked with Madhuri Dixit again in Gulaab Gang. Today Saroj Khan is called as Saroj Maa and is one of the best dance mentor or dance guru ever!

Saroj Khan also was seen in various shows on the small screen. She appeared in a reality dance show “Nach Baliye” as a member of the jury in 2005 which aired on STAR One. She also appeared in the second season of the same show. She has also been a judge for the show “Ustaadon ka ustaad” which is aired on Sony Entertainment Television (India). In 2008, she appeared in the dance reality show Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan, which was aired on NDTV Imagine. She choreographed for this show. She appeared on Sony’s Boogie Woogie (TV series) show from December 2008 as one of the judges, along with Javed Jaffrey, Naved Jaffrey and Ravi Behl. She was a judge on the third season of a popular show – Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa which began on 27 February 2009 and which was telecasted on Sony Entertainment Television (India) alongside former Nach Baliye judge Vaibhavi Merchant and actress Juhi Chawla.
Her choreography and amazing dance moves literally made people to fell in love with her dancing skills. It was a dream come true for every actress to get her song choreographed by such an amazing and talented dance guru. Along with her many prominent movies, Lagaan, Fiza, Taal, Sanam, Pardes, Khamoshi, Mohra, Baazigar, Soilder, Guru, Jab We Met, Agent Vinod, ABCD, Love Aaj Kal, Khatta Meetha, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Life Partner, Saawariya, Don, Fanaa, Veer Zara, Swades, Saathiya were some movies which falls under her fimography list.

She has bagged many national and international awards for her amazing contribution to the Indian Cinema. She is the National Film Award holder for Best Choreography Devdas – Dola Re Dola, Sringaram and Jab We Met. She has also received many Film Fare Best Choreography Awards for films like 2008 – Guru, Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Khalnayak, Beta, Sailaab, Chaalbaaz and Tezaab. Saroj Khan also holds the title of American Choreography Award for Outstanding Achievement in Lagaan.
